Book Girls Don’t Cry is a feature where we will discuss/vent/advise on a bookish topic. This feature is co-hosted with the lovely Amy at Book Loving Mom.

A Day in the Life of Yours Truly

What is it like to be me? Since my life is super duper interesting I thought I’d make this week’s BGDC a bit more personal and give you a sneak peek into my daily life.

Starting usually around 7-8am, I’m awoken by a little 3 year old devil who doesn’t understand the concept of quiet mornings. Then after an hour of coaxing him to eat, get dressed, put his boots and coat on, then pick 10 toys until he decides which one to bring to daycare, I’m left all by my lonesome for a few peaceful hours. At least until the world (i.e. Jenni) wakes up.

Working from home also means I get to work on my own schedule, and since I’m so not a morning person – like I’m not even human before 10am – I do not even touch my computer until 11am on most days. The following is apparently weird from what I’ve gathered, but I love to use early mornings to read. A perfect morning for me is sitting on my couch with a cup of hot coffee, a morning snack, and a book. I also find I have less distractions then – Twitter, Facebook, and email is peacefully quiet that early. Yes, I totally have attention span issues. If I read in the evenings I can’t stop myself from checking what’s happening on social media so it’s pretty unproductive. I can’t help it! I don’t want to miss a thing!

So then comes Jenni.  Once she’s up (luckily for me our timezones are 3 hours apart ha!) I can kiss my peace goodbye >.< After that we’re up to our usual daily gossiping, mayhem, and all that good stuff, and reading is so not happening so I might as well do some work and drug myself with more coffee. My work life means days spent designing, visiting blogs, talking to authors, planning bookish events – yes I’m in reader heaven all day! – but like any job there’s also tons of stress and rant-filled days (and Jenni’s there to hear ALL about it so I guess she’s not so bad, eh!?). But it’s what keeps us all alive and fighting, right?

Evenings you’ll often find me binge watching TV. I love me my TV shows and I can easily spend hours lost in my favorite series with no regret. Some of what I’ve been watching lately (spoil me and die!):

Also I’m a night owl – kinda comes with hating mornings I guess – so going to be before 12-1am is just not happening. Who needs more than 6 hours of sleep? I’m all about living, not sleeping >.<

And that, my friends, is my average day in a nutshell.

When do you like to read during the day?
Oh and any TV show recs? 😉

I love this post! I just read whenever I have time which is mostly before going to bed. My husband is obsessed with Sons of Anarchy! I watch it with him but I feel that I can’t be a true fan without having a heart attack. So I just watch an episode here and there. My current tv obsessions are The Mindy Project and Game of Thrones. Awesome shows!

I like to read before bed too but I usually last like 15 mins and then pass out haha. Totally lulls me to sleep. I watched the first GoT series but I never continued for no particular reason. I should get back into it! I’ll check out The Mindy project too!

Hi Giselle, your days sound like mind. I’m pretty much busy all day till the evening. I’m currently binge watching House, M.D. on Netflix right now. Love that guy!

    • Giselle

House is freaking hilarious I loved that show! I find it gets less interesting in the last season when the cast changes up. I still have to watch the last season, too! 🙂

  3. Amanda @ Book Badger

It’s actually pretty great to get an insight to your life Giselle, although that sounds a little stalkerish. I can imagine that the work you do is utterly fantastic, being that close to authors and publishers on the regular, but just running a blog id stressful, as well as other life things I do, so I can’t imagine your work load with children too! I have to admit, I’m quite the night owl too, I hate getting up before 10am, and I’m usually still awake way into 2am in the morning, which is usually when all my blogging friends wake up, damn time zone and differences! TV shows recs, hmm, I love Elementary, but some Sherlock fans dislike it, so that might be hit and miss, but I also enjoy Once Upon A Time and NCIS: LA and CSI’s, I love my murder and crime shows! 🙂

    • Giselle

It’s definitely a full time job and running a blog was getting to be a bit too much for me alone so I’m really happy to have gotten a co-blogger it makes blogging fun again and not so overwhelming. When the lil one is not here I’m rarely up before 10 too it’s just not safe for my mental health to be up before then I think! Even if I got to bed super early it doesn’t change a thing >.< I started Once Upon A Time but only got to episode 2 until another show took all my attention and I haven't gotten back to it yet but I will! NCIS is one I never tried but I also love crime shows I'll eventually see what the fuss is about! 🙂

  4. Aimee

I like reading in the mornings, too! Usually from around 9am to lunch. It’s really quiet at home in the mornings, so I can read without anyone bothering me. I watch TV series on the evenings as well, but the local, Tagalog ones. 🙂 Sadly, because I don’t watch a lot of English TV series, I can’t really give you any recs. I’m a big fan of some of the older ones like FRIENDS and Grey’s Anatomy. 🙂

Working from home is great for sure! I’m also NOT a morning person and very much a night owl! I usually read the most at night on days I work, and during the evenings I’m home when I don’t work. Working the 3 to 10 pm shift at the hospital really works great for me that way!

  6. Christianna

I just started watching Orphan Black and I’m totally hooked! I’m only three episodes in but I’d say give it a go. It keeps you on your toes and the characters are really awesome!

  7. ShootingStarsMag

that’s great you get to do what you love during the day, even with the occasional stress and annoyances!! I tend to read whenever I have the chance, but lately that’s been at night when I get home from work (I get off at 9 p.m.) and before I go to sleep.

As for recommended shows…I really love Elementary (Sherlock Holmes in NY) and the BBC miniseries Broadchurch.

  8. Megan

I’m so jealous that you can work from home! I would love to be able to cut out my 1.5 hours of commuting, especially since I can’t read on the bus without feeling sick. 🙁

  9. Ashley @ Dr. Pepper Diva

I’m most definitely a night owl…always have been. I mostly like to read at night in bed because that’s when everything is quiet around here. I’m too distracted by social media and other things to read during the day.

  10. Nereyda @Mostly YA Book Obsessed

Hart of Dixie is the shit! I love Wade and Zoey! I’ve only watched until the end of season 2. I can’t watch normal tv for some reason. I have to wait until it’s on Netflix, then I can binge on it.

I don’t watch many TV shows, I’m more of a ‘watch concerts and performances on you tube’ junkie. Right now I’m obsessed with The Civil Wars, Pentatonix and Pink. Always Pink!

I always love to read about what bloggers do when they’re not blogging. I mean this in a totally non stalker way 🙂

  11. Eileen @ Singing and Reading in the Rain

Haha it must be so cool to work from home! I wish I could stay home, but I guess I like school because it can be fun. Sometimes. Ugh but those few hours of piece and quiet sound amazing because it’s like no one else can bother you and I can never get that same kind of peace unless I literally wake up at 4 on any given day which is definitely not happening lol. But I loved reading about your day, fantastic post, Giselle! <33

  12. Jenea @ Books Live Forever

I am a morning person. 🙂 I get up at 430 when my husband gets up for work and enjoy the quiet before the 2 kids and 3 dogs are all up and the peace ends. Once the kids are off to school, I do all my blogging and reading. I am a Netflix and Amazon Instant junkie. Love Sons of Anarchy and Heart of Dixie too, can’t wait for new seasons to be available. Right now I am watching Dexter which is awesome, which I can only watch while the kids are at school.

  13. Jasprit

Giselle I wish I was as organised as you, I tend to get distracted by everything from Twitter to Instagram, hence the reason I’m so behind on my reading. I’ve also been binge watching a lot of shows too, some of my favourites include Scandal and Game of Thrones. Thanks for sharing a lovely post with us! 🙂

  14. Jessica @ Rabid Reads

I also get to make my own schedule, but I’m the opposite of you . . . I am up SERIOUSLY early, LOL. And I can read all day, every day. Typically, I use my mornings as my productive time (not that reading isn’t productive, but you know what I mean). As for TV recs–based on what you already binge watch, you NEED to watch Justified. NEED, Giselle 😉
